Diagnosis. Carapace without spines; pseudorostrum 0.08 times frontal lobe length, very short anterior margin, five lateral lenses and one in the middle of ocular lobe, one large lenses also on pseudorostrum, serrate anterior margin of pseudorostrum; maxilliped 3 propodus 1.25 times carpus length; maxilliped 3 propodus 1.41 times carpus length; uropodal peduncle 0.95 times last pleonite length; 4 setae on medial margin, 3 on outer one, 1.66 times endopod length; endopod with short hairs and 4 setae on medial margin.
Description. Subadult male (holotype MGAB CUM 1668).
Body size: 1.7 mm.
Carapace ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 A). Smooth integument, 0.53 times rest of entire body length, 2.2 times as long as high, pseudorostrum 0.08 times frontal lobe length, very short anterior margin, five lateral lenses and one in the middle of ocular lobe, one large lense also on pseudorostrum, serrate anterior margin of pseudorostrum.
Pereon, 0.37 times entire body length.
Pleon, 0.8 times entire body length.
Antenna 1 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 B). Basal article of peduncle 1.11 times as long as rest of articles together, two simple setae on medial margin, middle article with one simple seta on medial margin and one compose pedunculate seta on outer margin, main flagellum 0.77 times apical article of peduncle length, minute accessory flagellum, long aesthetascs.
Antenna 2 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 A). Almost fully developed, reaching the end of 3rd pleonite.
Maxilliped 3 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 C). Basis 0.63 times as long as rest of articles together, medial margin shortly serrate in distal half, one plumose seta on distally, two long pappose setae on outer process; merus 2.66 times as long as ischium, one pappose seta on outer margin; carpus 0.94 times as long as merus, three pappose setae on medial margin, one pappose much longer seta on distal margin; propodus 1.25 times as long as carpus, three pappose setae on medial margin, one plumose short one on outer margin; dactylus 0.5 times as long as propodus, one subterminal and one terminal robust pectinate seta 1.5 times dactylus length; fully developed exopod.
Pereopod 1 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 D). Basis 0.81 times as long as rest of articles together, outer margin serrate in distal half, one simple seta on both margins; merus as long as ischium, one simple seta on medial margin of ischium and merus; carpus 2 times as long as merus, three simple setae on medial margin, one on outer margin; propodus 0.83 times carpus length, two simple setae on medial margin; dactylus 0.8 times propodus length, terminal robust seta as long as dactylus; fully developed exopod.
Pereopod 2 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 E). Basis 0.77 times as long as rest of articles together, short serrate distal half of medial margin, one simple seta on both margins; merus 3 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on both margins; carpus 1.53 times as long as merus, two simple seta on outer margin, one simple and two stout unequal ones on medial margin; dactylus 1.5 times as long as propodus, two simple short setae on medial margin, one on outer margin, three subterminal setae and one terminal robust seta 1.26 times dactylus length; fully developed exopod.
Pereopod 3 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 F). Basis 1.24 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 2.8 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on outer margins of ischium and merus; carpus 1.16 times as long as merus length, one short simple seta on medial margin; propodus 1.14 times as long as carpus; dactylus 0.31 times as long as propodus, fused with terminal robust seta; fully developed exopod.
Pereopod 4 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 G). Basis 1.03 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 2.4 times as long as ischium length, one simple seta on outer margin of ischium and merus; carpus 1.25 times as long as merus length, one simple short seta on outer margin; propodus 1.06 times as long as carpus, one simple short seta on medial margin; dactylus 0.31 times as long as propodus, fused with terminal robust seta; fully developed exopod.
Pereopod 5 ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 H). Basis 0.5 times as long as rest of articles together; merus 1.5 times as long as ischium, one simple seta on medial margin of ischium and merus; carpus 1.42 times as long as merus; propodus 0.82 times as long as carpus; dactylus 0.36 times propodus length, fused with terminal robust seta.
Uropod ( Fig. 30 View FIGURE 30 I). Peduncle 0.95 times as long as last pleonite, 1.66 times endopod length, serrate margins, three short simple setae on outer margin, short hair-like setae on proximal part of medial margin, four simple setae on medial margin; exopod 0.52 times as long as endopod, one subterminal short seta on distal end of apical article, terminal robust seta 2.27 times exopod length; medial margin of endopod with short hair-like setae and four short setae, terminal robust pectinate seta as long as endopod.
Etymology. The species is dedicated in the memory of the physician Iulius Barasch (1815–1863), who funded the first hospital for children in Bucharest, Romania.
Remarks. Cumella baraschi sp. nov. is similar to C. hirsuta ( Hansen, 1895) from Bermuda ( Hansen, 1895) because of the uropodal peduncle with four medial setae and uropodal endopod also with four setae. It differs in: 1) maxilliped 3 with shorter basis; 2) pereopod 1 with three setae on medial margin of carpus vs. two; 3) pereopod 2 merus with one medial seta vs. two; 4) pereopod 2 dactylus with one seta on outer margin vs. none; 5) shorter uropodal peduncle and rami; 6) microserrate setae on medial margin of peduncle and endopod vs. none.
