Taxonomy. Original description: Nemacheilus insignis euphraticus Bănărescu & Nalbant, 1964: 175 , pl. 7 (figs. 11-12) [Euphrates (Firat Nehri) Basin, Malatya, eastern Anatolia, Turkey; holotype: ZMH 1889].—Syrian synonyms: Barbatula euphratica ( Bănărescu & Nalbant, 1964) View in CoL ; Oxynoemacheilus freyhofi Jouladeh-Roudbar, Eagderi & Hosseinpour, 2016 View in CoL .—Revisions: Freyhof et al. (2012).—Illustration: Bănărescu & Nalbant (1964: pl. 7, figs. 11-12).
Status in Syria. This species has not yet been recorded from Syria; however, we observed that it is distributed along the border river between Turkey and Syria.—Syrian material: None.
Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Syria: Euphrates River basin.—Distribution in River Basin: 1-Dajleh & Khabour, 2-Euphrates & Aleppo.—General distribution: Asia Minor and Middle East: Euphrates River and Tigris River drainages ( Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran).—Distribution in Ecoregion: 441-Lower Tigris & Euphrates, 442-Upper Tigris & Euphrates.—Habitat: This species occurs in streams with moderate flow. Freshwater.
Economic importance. No commercial importance.
Conservation. Conservation status in Syria: Unknown.—IUCN: NE (2023).—Threats: ABS, CON, EUT.— Moderate sensitivity to human activities.—Keystone species.—Decline status: Unknown.—Moderate priority for conservation action.
