Distribution. Western and Eastern Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. Western Atlantic: USA (Virginia, North and South Carolinas to Southern Florida), Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Gulf of Mexico, St. Thomas, St. Martin, St. Eustatius, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Panama, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent, Isla de Margarita, Bonaire, Guyana, Brazil, and Trindade island; Eastern Atlantic: Mauritania to Angola, Cape Verde Islands, Prince, Saint Thomas, and Annobon islands; Eastern Pacific: Baja California to Peru, Ecuador, and Galapagos Islands ( Rathbun 1930; Alves et al. 2012; Poupin 2018; Tavares & Mendonça 2022).

Material examined. Barbados, Schooners Bay , St. Peter, subtidal, 13°14’40.82”N, 59°38’41.97”W, 1 Ô CW: 13.1 mm ( BLSZ 062 ) .

Remarks. The single specimen of Cronius ruber was caught in crab traps placed on sandy bottom (~ 4m deep) on the west coast of Barbados. Jones (1968b: 188) reported one specimen of Cronius ruber collected by John Webster on the south coast of Barbados; however, Jones did not deposit this specimen of Cronius ruber to the Barbados Museum or any other institution; thus, this record warrants caution. Our study confirms the presence of this species in Barbados with newly collected material. Ng & Nyber (2013) confirmed that Portunus ruber Lamarck, 1818 , is a junior synonym of Cancer thunborgii Euphrasén, 1795 , and determined that P. ruber could be maintained by reversal of the precedence set under Article 23.9.1 of the ICZN (1999: 27), which now confirms the names Cancer thunborgii Euphrasén, 1795 , as a nomen oblitum and Portunus ruber Lamarck, 1818 , as a nomen protectum.
