Type:― MEXICO. Vera Cruz: Xalapa, 5 Oct 1898, on Ipomoea jalapa ( L.) Pursh, E. W.D. Holway 3076. Figure 3. A− C View FIGURE 3 (Holotype).
Spermogonia on adaxial side of leaves, 80–128 μm broad by 128–144 μm deep, globoid or ovoid-globoid, minute, gregarious, immersed, ostiolar filaments free. Aecia on abaxial side of leaves, crowded in groups of 1–6, cupulate, low, peridium whitish, darkening later, the margin erect, lacerate; peridial cells, 24–37 × 16–24 μm, rhomboidal, overlapping somewhat, wall 4–6 μm thick, the outer smooth, the inner strongly verrucose; aeciospores 24–35 × 19–24 μm, globoid or angular, often resembling peridial cells in shape, wall 4–6 μm thick, not uniform, colorless, closely and finely but distinctly verrucose. Uredinia on both sides of leaves, numerous, scattered, frequently seen in groups, irregular or roundish, up to 0.8 mm across, rather early naked, pulverulent, brown, ruptured epidermis conspicuous; urediniospores 26–35 × 21–24 μm, globoid, ellipsoid or obovoid, wall 2–3 μm thick, chestnut-brown, prominently echinulate, the spines 4–6 μm apart, three pores, equatorial. Telia not seen, teliospores in uredinia, 46–58 × 17–23 μm, ellipsoid to clavate–ellipsoid, slightly constricted at septum, wall 1–1.5μm thick, 4–7 μm at apex, smooth, golden-brown, germ pore apical in upper cell, at septum in lower cell, pedicel up to 55 μm long, hyaline, persistent ( Arthur 1907 − 1921; Cummins 1956). Life cycle (0/Icv, IIpe, III).
Specimen examined (Holotype)— MEXICO. Vera Cruz: Xalapa, 5 Oct 1898, on Ipomoea jalapa (L.) Pursh, E.W.D. Holway 3076 (PUR32690!).
Distribution ― Puccinia jalapensis is known only from Mexico ( Holway 1904; Cummins 1956; Farr & Rossman 2015).
Notes ―The oldest validly published name was Aecidium jalapense , an anamorph name. Arthur (1907 – 1921) suggested the name Dicaeoma jalepense and the exsicata in which the name “ Puccinia jalapensis (Holw.) Barthol. n. comb. ” first appears was distributed under the number 2549 by North Americam Uredinales in 1921 that include since the number 2501 to 2600. In the exsicata no description was made and Cummins (1956) was the first to describe the teliospores, but by the interpretation of the new International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi and plants (McNeill et al. 2012) we understand that Puccinia jalapensis (Holw.) Barthol. name should be preserved.
Our stereo and microscopic observations of species are very similar to those of Cummins (1956). Like Cummins (1956), we also found very few teliospores, so they were only illustrated by us in a line drawing.
