Description (male only). Length 10 mm. Ground colour dull black, with pattern of silvery microsetulosity.
Head with frons broad, faintly ridged longitudinally, microsetulose except for bare shining black anterior part of epicephalon, posterior part of epicephalon sparsely microsetulose compared to frontal vitta; frontal vitta broad but weakly differentiated anterior to ocelli, gradually tapered to an indistinct depression posteriorly. Head chaetotaxy complete, with 2 frontal setae. Palpus broad, black, densely microsetulose. Occipital suture shining black. Clypeus evenly microsetulose, longer than face plus lunule, dorsal margin straight. Length of first flagellomere 2X maximum width.
Thorax with scutellum silvery microsetulose, scutum black and evenly microsetulose except for two narrow silvery longitudinal strips and a transverse silver strip extending from lateral third of suture to a diagonal silver strip running from suture down across the posterior margin of the anepisternum and down the katepisternum just in front of the katepisternal seta row. Proepisternum with three inconspicuous ventral setae, each slightly shorter than proepisternum. Proepimeron shining along posterodorsal margin only, continuous with extensive shining anterodorsal part of anepisternum, area behind procoxae microsetulose. Legs black except as follows: fore femur yellow at apex, fore tarsus white except extreme base of tarsomere 1. Mid and hind femora with a broad yellow preapical band, hind femur also with a broad yellow band near middle and a yellow base. Hind femur slightly flattened, outer surface weakly sulcate. Hind trochanter reddish brown. Hind tarsus slightly swollen, white with distal tarsomeres slightly browned, tarsomere one white with white setae, distal tarsomeres with black setae.
Wing with narrow basal and preapical bands, a broad and rounded discal band, and a narrowly pigmented apex separated from preapical band by a diffuse pale area. Anal cell bare, relatively short; CuA2 straight, slightly distal to dm̄cu, distal angle 45 °.
Abdominal syntergite 1+2 weakly humped at junction between T1 and T2; T1 setose, with posteriormost row of setae longest. Abdomen of unique type (in glycerin) with tergal pruinosity obscured, but pleural membrane black with a vertical parallel-sided white band on anterior third of P3. Genital fork (S5) with long narrow and incurved arms with inner margins densely packed with short, stout setae, inner bases of arms with a prominent narrow, parallel-sided process ending in a cluster of stout, short setae. Distiphallus with a broad, cylindrical basal part ending in a short truncated phallic bulb; distal part (beyond phallic bulb) of equal width to basal part but very short, ending in a in a dark cup-like "glans". Blade of ejaculatory apodeme extremely broad ( Fig. 26 View FIGURES 24 – 30 ), much broader than epandrial height and much larger than sperm pump, ejaculatory apodeme including sperm pump subequal in length to epandrium.
Type material. Holotype (♂ CAS) Madagascar. Moramanga district, Tamatave , Torotorofotsy, 22 km N Andasibe. 18°46.25' 48°25.93', 23̄ 25.x.2014, S.A. Marshall, sequence MYCRO 121 ̄15.
Comments. The distinctive distiphallus with its cup-like terminal "glans" is a remarkable character, most closely paralleled in some Aristobatina species ( Marshall 2014), and probably homologous with the swollen portion of the distal distiphallus in P. zarpa .
Etymology. The specific name campanula is from the Latin diminutive for "bell", and refers to the cup-like or bell like.
