Xyleborus adumbratus Blandford, 1894: 115 View in CoL . Synonymy: Schedl, 1963: 482.

Bostrichus alni Mulsant & Rey, 1856: 111 View in CoL . Synonymy: Hagedorn, 1910: 108.

Xyleborus septentrionalis Niisima, 1909: 162 View in CoL . syn. n.

Xyleborus vicarius Eichhoff, 1876: 203 View in CoL . Synonymy: Schedl, 1963: 482.

Taxonomy: Niisima (1909) described X. septentrionalis View in CoL from three syntype specimens: one from Tayoroma (Teshio province), and two from Yoshino (Yamato province). One of the Yoshino specimens and the Tayoroma specimen were located in Niisima’s collection at NIAES. To ensure correct and consistent application of the name, we here designate the female specimen from Yoshino as the lectotype of Xyleborus septentrionalis Niisima. The View in CoL lectotype is labeled: “Yoshino [handwritten] Niisima [typed] \ [handwritten Japanese characters] \ Xyleborus septentrionalis View in CoL (XVI-1-154) n. sp. [handwritten] nach Y. Niijima [typed] \ [red label] LECTOTYPE Xyleborus septentrionalis Niisima View in CoL [typed]”. Female paralectotype (NIAES), hereby designated, labeled “26 [handwritten] \ XI01 [handwritten] \ Teshio Tayoroma [handwritten] Niisima [typed] \ No. 13 [handwritten] \ Xyleborus septentrionalis View in CoL (XVI-1-155) n. sp. [handwritten] nach Y. Niijima [typed] \ [yellow label] PARALECTOTYPE Xyleborus septentrionalis Niisima View in CoL [typed]”.

The description, lectotype, paralectotype and a non-type specimen of Xyleborus septentrionalis were examined and are conspecific with specimens of X. pfeilii in NMNH and RJR.
