Type locality. Dhappa , near Kolkata, India ( Tattersall 1908) .

Record from Thailand. The first discovery of this species in Thailand was by Murano (1988) from the brackish water of Prachuap Province. Later, Hanamura et al. (2008) also noted this species from Samut Songkhram and Chonburi, Gulf of Thailand.

Habitat. This species is very abundant in shallow coastal waters at the surface or intertidal zone ( Hanamura et al. 2008).

Distribution. This species is known from India (W.M. Tattersall 1908; 1914; 1915; 1922; Panikkar & Aiyar 1937; Pillai 1965; Gupta & Gupta 1984; Hanamura et al. 2008; Biju & Panampunnayil 2009; Biju et al. 2014; 2016), Bangladesh (W.M. Tattersall 1914; 1915), Indonesia ( Nouvel 1957; Hanamura et al. 2008; Mantiri et al. 2012), Singapore (O.S. Tattersall 1960), Malaysia (O.S. Tattersall 1965; Hanamura et al. 2008; Ramarn et al. 2012a) and Thailand ( Murano 1988; Hanamura et al. 2008).

Remarks. This taxon was created by W.M. Tattersall (1908) for specimens collected from the brackish water of Bengal and can be easily distinguished from allied species by the semicircular frontal plate, unsegmented outer apical setae and the relative length of the endopod of the fourth male pleopod and the number of spines on the distal part of the telson. M. orientalis is closely related to M. tenuipes , however, the first species differs from the latter species in having a broader cornea, a short antennal peduncle, and fourth male pleopods not reaching the uropodal statocyst region ( Hanamura et al. 2008; Biju & Panampunnayil 2009).
