Described from Valle di Natisone (Friuli, NE Italy) (Pollonera 1886). Pezzoli & Giusti (1980) reported that the “ type specimens collected by Tellini and studied by Pollonera have gone dispersed, at least this has emerged from our careful investigations on both the Pollonera collection (Istituto di Zoologia Sistematica, Turin), and of contemporary historical collections. There are only shells that could have been studied by Pollonera in the De Betta Collection (Civ. St. Nat. of Verona), collected in Friuli (without precise geographic localization) and sent from Pirona to De Betta under the name Hydr. forojuliensis. De Betta in the card that accompanied the material, deceived by the name above, or unable to reach a personal diagnosis, put Hydrobia sp. nova?, and below see Paludestrina forumjuliana Pollonera , Note Malac., 1887, p. 3, table Fig. 15–16 View FIGURES 2–22 . Given the too vague indication of referred locality to these specimens and for a more precise verification of the species, one of us has undertaken a series of studies in the sources of the locus typicus indicated by Pollonera (1886). Three stations were identified, in different locations between Falto and the middle course of the Natisone River, with present shells of a species perfectly corresponding to the " Paludestrina " forumjuliana , as described and depicted by Pollonera, and to the specimens of the De Betta Collection ( Table 4, Figures 1–2 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURES 2–22 ). One of these shells, collected in the spring that flows from the lefthand slope of the valley of Natisone River (near Paderno, in the municipality of Premariacco, Udine, 2.09.1973), was chosen as neotype; a sample from the same locality, together with the ones collected in the other two localities (source between Oculis and Spagnut, municipality of S. Pietro at Natisone. Udine, 17.08.1971; fountain on the road between Spagnut and Biacis, municipality of Pulfero, Udine, 2.09.1973) were chosen as neoparatypes. The neotype is deposited in the Civic Museum of Natural History of Verona together with the historical material of the Collection De Betta. The neo-paratypes are kept in the Pezzoli Collection ( Pezzoli & Giusti 1980).
Endemic to NE Italy ( Manganelli et al. 2000) and North Western Slovenia, this taxon is restricted to a small region, approx. 70 km x 60 km, with at least 15 known localities ( Sket 1992, Slapnik & Cianfanelli 2010). It has been recorded also from northern Croatia ( Schütt 1975), but the identity of the population is highly questionable as it is far from the closest Italo-Slovenian locality and situated in different biogeographic area. Our specimens have been collected within the range given by Schütt (1975) and De Mattia (2007), and the shell resembled those figured by Pollonera (1886), Schütt (1975), Giusti & Pezzoli (1980), Pezzoli & Giusti (1980), Pezzoli (1988) and De Mattia (2007). The shells from the type locality (Pezzoli & Giusti 1989: Table 4) are nearly identical with our Iglica forumjuliana .
