Revised description. Shell medium-sized, solid, moderately broad fusiform with slightly gradate spire; apical angle 36–44°. Protoconch not preserved. Teleoconch of ten whorls. Early teleoconch whorls with two narrow, adsutural spiral cords separated by weakly concave central part with opisthocline axial riblets.Riblets fading on fourth whorl. Later whorls with prominent, swollen, convex, sharply-delimited subsutural collar, whorl flat-sided to weakly concave below. Entire surface covered by low, narrow spiral cords, separated by even narrower grooves, spirals weak to subobsolete over subsutural collar, 4–6 stronger cords below. Suture narrowly incised, linear. Last whorl ~60% of total height; subsutural collar broad, smooth, rounded. Subsutural ramp of medium width, weakly concave. Midwhorl inflated forming low-set shoulder, weakly concave below, base poorly delimited. Siphonal fasciole weakly swollen with prominent growth increments. Spiral cords weak over collar, stronger on ramp, subobsolete at midwhorl, appearing again over base, strengthening over fasciole. Aperture moderately wide pyriform. Outer lip not thickened, with 6–8 lirae deep within aperture; anal sinus deep, moderately wide, asymmetrically U-shaped, with apex mid-ramp. Siphonal canal moderately long, moderately wide, only slightly deflected to the left with shallowly notched tip. Columella weakly excavated in adapical third, straight below, very weakly twisted at fasciole, smooth. Columellar and parietal callus thin, adherent, poorly delimited, forming broad rim.
Discussion. This species was unintentionally made available by Quenstedt (1884: 625), referring to the illustrations in Hörnes (1854: pl. 38, figs 1–6). As Quenstedt (1884) explicitly mentioned the delicate spiral sculpture, typical for this species as understood herein, we select the specimen illustrated by Hörnes (1854: pl. 38, fig. 5) as lectotype.
Perrona vindobonensis (Quenstedt, 1884) is exceptionally abundant at the Gainfarn locality, where it displays some variability concerning spire height. Stout specimens (figs 34C–D) occur along with comparatively slender morphotypes (figs 34A–B). Similarly, there is some variability in spiral sculpture, but smooth specimens do not occur, and the subsutural collar never develops beads. Therefore, a closer relation with the beaded Perrona descendens ( Hilber, 1879) is unlikely. Moreover, the spiral sculpture of P. descendens becomes obsolete on the last teleoconch whorls. These species are also distinguished by the presence of lirae within the aperture of P. vindobonensis . This contrasts with Kovács & Vicián (2021), who considered P. vindobonensis to fit within the intraspecific variability of P. descendens ( Hilber, 1879) , a position not followed here. Perrona lydiae ( Hoernes & Auinger, 1891) is superficially similar to P. vindobonensis , but is much larger and lacks the prominent spiral cords of P. vindobonensis .
Quenstedt (1884) erroneously listed this species as Pleurotoma prevostina Defrance, 1826 . The description in Defrance (1826: 391), however, suggests that Defrance had a Granulatocincta species at hand (see Additional taxa).
Paleoenvironment. The frequent occurrence at Gainfarn suggests a preference for inner neritic environments with sea grass meadows ( Zuschin et al. 2007). Coastal lagoonal settings are indicated for the Karpatian occurrence at Stetten ( Austria) ( Harzhauser et al. 2002).
Distribution in Central Paratethys. Karpatian (early Miocene): Korneuburg Basin: Stetten ( Austria) (Harzhauser 2002, 2003); Badenian (middle Miocene): Vienna Basin: Gainfarn, Enzesfeld ( Austria), Mikulov (the Czech Republic) ( Hoernes & Auinger 1891; Švagrovský 1958); Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin: Forchtenau ( Austria) (hoc opus); Pannonian Basin: Keletcserhát, Bóta, Pécsszabolcs, Nógrádszakal, Márháza ( Hungary) (CsepreghyMeznerics 1954; Bohn-Havas 1973), Krka Basin: Dolenja Brezovica, Dolenja Stara vas ( Slovenia) ( Mikuž 2009); Dacian Basin: Târnene ( Bulgaria) ( Nikolov 1994).
