Pseudosparna pichincha View in CoL sp. nov.
( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 2. 1 )
Description. Male. Integument predominantly dark brown with antennomere 4, prosternum, coxae and basal halves of femora pale yellow. Dorsal pubescence predominantly grayish brown, pronotum densely covered in red ferrugineous pubescence except for small transverse brown fascias along the apical and basal margins. Humeral margins narrowly yellowish to red. Antennae very long, exceeding elytral apices by five antennomeres; antennomeres 1–5 with short sparse setae beneath. Prothorax with acute lateral tubercles, slightly directed backwards, near the base. Pronotum with a row of punctures along the posterior margin. Prosternal process very narrow, anterior coxae almost contiguous; mesosternal process less than ¼ the width of one mesocoxa.
Elytra flattened, finely and densely punctate, each elytron with a longitudinal keel paralleling the lateral margin from base to apex, with setae lining the edge of posterior third, and two slightly elevated longitudinal carinae coalescing before apex. Elytral apices semicircularly emarginated, outer angles projected in acute spine, sutural angles obtusely projected. Metatarsomere 1 more than 1.5 times the last two tarsomeres together. Abdomen with urotergite 5 subtruncate at apex, urosternite 5 transversely truncated, angles projected in acute spine.
Female. Antennae similar to male; urotergite 5 truncated at apex; urosternite 5 subtruncated, angles slightly projected in spine.
Measurements (mm), male/female. Total length, 8.0–8.8/7.3–8.0; prothorax length, 1.5–1.6/0.9–1.0; prothorax width, 2.0–2.1/1.8–2.0; elytral length, 5.5–6.2/5.3–5.9; humeral width, 2.1–2.2/2.0–2.2.
Etymology. The specific name references the Ecuador province of Pichincha , where all the specimens were collected.
Type material. Holotype. Male. ECUADOR, Pichincha : Nambillo Valley, near Mindo, 1450 m, 28.VI.1987, M. Cooper col. ( BMNH). Paratypes, same locality and collector, female, 9.VI.1987 ( MNRJ); male, 17.VI.1987 ( BMNH); female, 26.VI.1987 ( BMNH), male, 30.VI.1987 ( MNRJ), female, 13.VIII.1987 ( BMNH).
Remarks. The presence of a longitudinal lateral keel from base to apex on each elytron and its predominantly dark brown color with a small yellowish to red humeral margin is diagnostic for P. pichincha sp. nov.
