8. Loxandrus crenulatus Chaudoir, 1868:343 View in CoL
This taxon was described from an unspecified number of specimens collected in « Texas ». Chaudoir’s collection in MHNP contains two specimens under that name. One of them, a female labelled « Texas [handwritten]/lecto [red label]/type [red label]/ Lectotype Loxandrus crenulatus Chaudoir desig. R. T. Allen 72/ crenulatus Mus. Paris » is here designated as the lectotype. The second specimen is a male; the genitalia were dissected, with the endophallus pulled out, and stored in a microvial in glycerine .
Both specimens (SBL ¼ 6.2 mm [$ lectotype]; ABL ¼ about 6.8 mm [$ lectotype], 6.3 mm [#]) are conspecific with specimens of L. crenatus LeConte, 1852 [NEW SYNONYMY]. As pointed out by Allen (1972:112) about L. crenatus , ‘‘this is one of the more distinct species of smaller Loxandrus . Once seen it is difficult to confuse it with other species in the genus. Its highly shining surface, distinct punctate striae and brown color are characteristic.’’ I would add that it is one of the only six North American species with setae underneath the last tarsomeres of each leg. The other ones belong to different groups and are morphologically very distinct. Allen certainly planned to rule on the status of this taxon but forgot to do so.
