Pagurus longimanus Wass, 1963 View in CoL
(Figs. 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G)
Pagurus longimanus Wass, 1963: 146 View in CoL , fig. 6.— Sánchez & Campos, 1978: 52, figs 19, 20.— Coelho & Ramos-Porto, 1986: 41.— Rieger, 1998: 415.— Melo, 1999: 134, fig. 78.
Diagnosis. Shield flattened, broader than long. Rostrum obsolete. Ocular peduncles short and stout, with corneae dilated. Ocular acicles triangular, concave and with minute submarginal spine. Antennular peduncles long, with ultimate segment overreaching completely base of corneae. Antennal peduncles with acicles reaching corneae. Right cheliped long; merus and carpus stout; dorsal surface of carpus with transverse rows of denticles, dorsomesial margin with some irregular denticles, lateral margin granulated; palm longer than carpus; fingers flattened, cutting edge with fine calcareous teeth. Left cheliped with palm smooth, and 1.5 length of carpus; dorsal face of carpus with spines. Second and third pereopods slender; carpi with dorsal crest of spines; dactyls with short and stiff distal sheaf of setae on dorsal margin. Telson with lobes asymmetrical and distal margins bearing irregular spines.
Distribution. Western Atlantic — Colombia, French Guiana and Brazil (Amapá).
Habitat. Little is known about this species, only that the individual were collected at 60 metres depth.
Material examined. Brazil: Amapá – “Alm. Saldanha”, st. 2012A, 1 male: 3.7 mm (DOUFPE–3680).
Remarks. Wass (1963) described Pagurus longimanus based on only one incomplete male from French Guiana. Later Sánchez & Campos (1978), studying material from Colombia, examined 20 individuals of P. longimanus and complemented the original description of Wass (1963). Pagurus longimanus is most closely related to P. exilis . The two species can be distinguished by differences in the length, width and ornamentation of the larger cheliped, and in the telson and rostrum.
