Range:— Colombia and Venezuela to Bolivia (CO, LP, SC).
Ecology:— Uncommon epiphytic in montane forests and cloud forests at 2400–2900 m (1450–4150 m outside Bolivia).
Notes:— In Bolivia, Serpocaulon subandinum can be confused with S. eleutherophlebium (Fée) A.R.Sm. , S. funckii , and S. ptilorhizon (Christ)A.R.Sm. , which also have long-creeping, relatively narrow rhizomes with pinnatisect laminae; additionally, the size and shape of their laminae is very similar. However, S. subandinum differs from all of these species by its laminae densely pubescent with septate hairs (vs. glabrous or with sparse hairs or scales). Kessler 9135 was previously determined as S. ptilorhizon by M. Sundue.
