Sesleria bielzii Schur (1850: 109) View in CoL
Lectotype (designated here):— ROMANIA. Transylvania: Rodnaer Alpen [ Rodna mts. ], Kühhorn [peak Ineul], E.A. Bielz s.n. ( SIB 5976 !). Figure 1.
Note:— Kováts (1984: 63) cited as isotype a specimen deposited at BP (BP 10175!), “ Sesleria rigida Heuff. /= Sesleria bielzii Schur. /= Sesleria capitata Schur /In alpibus graniticis Arpasiensibus Juli/Dr Schur”. Schur (1850) mentioned two gatherings in the protologue, one collected by A. Bielz (“Kühhorn bei Rodna”), and one collected by himself (“auf dem Arpasch”); these are syntypes. Kováts’ citation of the BP specimen as isotype can be considered as an error to be corrected (Art. 9.9, McNeill et al. 2012). However, given the details on the label of this specimen, it is hard to regard it as original material: the plant is identified as S. rigida , and on the label S. bielzii and S. capitata Schur (1856: 201) nom. inval. are cited in synonymy. Nearly the same taxonomic treatment, in which S. bielzii and S. capitata were listed as synonyms of S. rigida var. capitata Schur (1856: 201) , was later published by Schur (1856: 212). The name Sesleria capitata was listed as a synonym of S. bielzii later by Schur (1866: 743), along with S. rigida var. capitata . It is possible that the material was relabelled after 1850, but we could not find any confirmation of this. We do not consider this specimen to be original material. Taking all this into account, designation of this specimen as isotype could be corrected to neotype. However, we found a specimen at SIB that undoubtedly belongs to the original material collected by Bielz on Ineul peak on Rodna mts. (Kühhorn bei Rodna), which we designate as lectotype, superseding the choice of Kováts according to Art. 9.19 ( McNeill et al. 2012).
