Rhyparoclopius annulirostris Stål, 1872 View in CoL
(Figs. 1–5)
Rhyparoclopius annulirostris Stål, 1872: 123 View in CoL [description]; Lethierry & Severin, 1896: 85 [catalog]; Barber, 1930: 217 [citation], 218 [comments]; Wygodzinsky, 1949: 69 [catalog]; Wygodzinsky, 1959: 312 [citation]; Maldonado, 1990: 533 [catalog.]; Forero, 2004: 169 –170 [citation].
Rhiparoclopius [sic] annulirostris View in CoL ; Costa Lima & Campos Seabra, 1945: 159 [citation, in doubt].
Rhyparoclopius annulirostris View in CoL was described based on a single macropterous male (Figs. 1–2) from the “Amazon” (Fig. 3) [northern Brazil], which measured 17 mm in length ( Stål 1872).
The specimens of R. annulirostris View in CoL examined (Figs. 4–5) are similar to the short description furnished by Stål (1872) and also appear similar to photos of the holotype, which can be freely accessed at (http://www2.nrm.se/en/ het_nrm/a/ rhyparoclopius View in CoL _ annulirostris View in CoL .html), and has been made available by the Swedish Royal Natural History Museum (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, NHRS) (Figs. 1–3, courtesy of Gunvi Lindberg), where the holotype is deposited. Both specimens examined here are macropterous and measure 16.5 mm (male) (Fig. 4) and 17 mm (female) (Fig. 5) in length. Of note is the observation that this species shows more numerous and somewhat longer erect bristles, particularly on head, thorax and legs. The first antennal segment has a long, erect, somewhat brighter and conspicuous bristle directed medially at middle third. The lateral posterior projecting margins of tergites appear to be very similar in the male and female examined here (Figs. 4–5). The male shows the seventh (sixth visible) abdominal segment enlarged and truncate apically, with a median apical notch (Fig. 4).
