Type:— NICARAGUA. Segovia, January 1848, Orsted 14334 (lectotype here designated: C 15! isolectotype: C 16!).

Terrestrial trees, 15–40 m tall. Leaf blade 17–23.5 cm long, 5.0– 10.5 cm wide, elliptic to narrowly elliptic, sometimes ovate to lanceolate, base cuneate, apex acuminate, adaxial face glabrous, abaxial face puberulent to glabrous; secondary veins 19–24 pairs petiole 3.0–5.0 cm long, puberulent, periderm persistent; stipules caducous, 5.0–7.0 cm long, puberulent or glabrous. Syconia solitary; peduncle 7.0– 18 mm long, puberulent; lateral bracts absent; receptacle 2.7–5.0 cm in diam. when dry, puberulent, apex rounded to subapiculate ( Fig. 9B, C View FIGURE 9 ).

Notes:— According to Liebmann (1851), the receptacle of Ficus segoviae has “ magnitudine receptaculi F. caricae ,” i.e., 3 cm or more in diam. This is a key feature for determining this species. The type has narrowly elliptic to lanceolate leaves, but we have noticed that other specimens can also have elliptical or ovate leaves.

Ficus segoviae was considered a synonym of F. insipida (e.g., DeWolf 1965; Berg 2009). However, F. segoviae differs from F. insipida mainly by the leaf blade shape (often narrowly elliptic vs. elliptic) and diameter of the receptacle (2.7–5.0 vs. 1.4–2.1 cm). Carvajal (1995) also observed morphological differences between F. insipida and F. segoviae , which led to establish F. insipida subsp. segoviae (Lieb.) Carvajal.

Liebmann (1851) did not mention the herbarium in which the type of F. segoviae was deposited. DeWolf (1965) cited the lectotype of this species was at C, but there are two collections there, so a lectotype is needed ( McNeill et al. 2012, art. 9.2). We have choosen the specimen labelled as C 15 because this is the most complete and informative specimen with twigs, leaves, stipules and syconium.
