Note: Oudemans (1941) proposed Pteronyssidae as a replacement name for Avenzoariidae Oudemans, 1905 . He argued that the name Avenzoariidae was incorrect because it was not based on the oldest genus in the family ( Pteronyssus Robin, 1877 ). That argument is not nomenclaturally valid, but Oudemans (1941) action accidentally made the name Pteronyssidae available for a new family (Mironov 2001). Subsequent authors ( Faccini & Atyeo 1981; Gaud & Atyeo 1996) considered this taxon as a subfamily of Avenzoariidae , and it was later restored to the family level (Mironov 2001; OConnor 2009).
