Acetabularia J.V. Lamouroux (1812: 185) View in CoL

Acetabularia caliculus J.V. Lamouroux in Quoy & Gaimard (1824: 621) (as ” Calyculus View in CoL ”).

TAXONOMIC STATUS: This species has been studied in detail by Berger et al. (2003: 527, figs. 8, 31) but without analyzing the type material For the Gulf of California, (this) it is required to assess whether the collections under this name really match the type and how it could be separated from other species of the genus.

RECORDS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA: ND ( González-González et al. 1996: 126), Puerto Peñasco ( Dawson 1966a: 8, Dawson 1966b: 55, Mateo-Cid et al. 2006: 48), Bahía de La Paz ( Huerta-Múzquiz & Mendoza-González 1985: 42, Rodríguez-Morales & Siqueiros-Beltrones 1999: 22), Cabo Pulmo and Los Frailes ( Anaya-Reyna & Riosmena-Rodríguez1996: 862), Isla Espíritu Santo and Isla La Partida ( Paúl-Chávez & Riosmena-Rodríguez 2000: 146), Southern Gulf ( Cruz-Ayala et al. 2001: 190), Bahía del Rincón ( Riosmena-Rodríguez et al. 2005: 13), Nothern Gulf ( Norris 2010: 103–104). Unpublished data: Castillo-Álvarez (1990: 32, table1), Saad-Navarro (1997: XX, supplement A).

Acetabularia crenulata J.V. Lamouroux (1816: 249) .

TAXONOMIC STATUS: This is a species that is a highly variable in morphology and size (Berger & Keaver 1992, Berger et al. 2003) that could be influencing the delimitation of the species in some regions. Berger et al. (2003) demonstrated that morphological, anatomical, ontogenetic and molecularly this species can be assigned to the genus Acetabularia View in CoL . Also, it was determined that one species can be distinguished well from the another species of the genus by the presence of sterile filaments between the crown and the presence of a terminal spine on the crowns. However, there is no evidence that the authors (are) have reviewed (ing) the type material or historicaly relevant collections. We need, at least in the case of the Gulf of California, to see if the suggested diagnostic features are consistently present.

RECORDS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA: Bahía de La Paz ( Rocha-Ramirez & Siqueiros-Beltrones 1990: 24, Riosmena-Rodríguez & Paúl-Chávez 1997: 68).

Acetabularia parvula Solms-Laubach (1895: 29) .

TAXONOMIC STATUS: Berger et al. (2003) concluded that the assignment of this species in the genus Acetabularia View in CoL is not suitable, coinciding with the observations by Schnetter and Bula-Meyer (1982: 42). However, as a result of their molecular analysis the authors concluded two molecular clades were previously considered only Polyphysa species. One clade brings together the living species Polyphysa View in CoL (where the type species is P. peniculus ) and another where a new generic name, Parvocaulis View in CoL , was proposed. For the second clade, Parvula was selected as the type species. The proper name is Parvocaulis parva (Solms-Laubach) Berger et al. (2003: 559) , and a study that compares type material to modern collections is required establish the correct identity of these species in the Gulf of California. Guiry & Guiry (2014) considered the name A. parvula as a taxonomic synonym of P. parvulus .

RECORDS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA: Bahía de Banderas ( Serviere-Zaragoza et al. 1993: table 2), Southern Gulf ( Mateo-Cid & Mendoza-González 1992: 25), Punta Arenas and Cabo Pulmo ( Mateo-Cid et al. 2000: 70). Unpublished data: Castillo-Álvarez (1990: 32, table1).

Acetabularia pusilla (M.A. Howe) F.S. Collins (1909b: 379) .

TAXONOMIC STATUS: According to Pedroche et al. (2005) and Guiry & Guiry (2014) this name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of P. pusillus . Berger et al. (2003: 560) under the same reasoning presented the species as A. parvula .

RECORDS IN THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA: Isla San Juan Nepomuceno ( Huerta-Múzquiz & Mendoza-González 1985: 42), Bahía de La Paz ( Riosmena-Rodríguez & Paul-Chávez 1997: 68). Unpublished data: Holguín-Quiñones (1971: 86, table IV), Castillo-Álvarez (1990: 32, table 1).
