Description. Male (holotype). Body length 4.1 mm. Head and pronotum reddish; elytra brownish black, with slight bluish reflection; legs reddish-brown, tibiae and distal part of femora darker, antennae dark reddish, distal antennomeres nearly brownish black.

Head 1.1 times as long as wide, differentiated from short neck; tempora strongly narrowing posteriad, posterior angles absent. Eyes medium-sized, rather convex. Dorsal surface moderately glossy, distinctly punctate and partly corrugated (especially medially to eyes), with indication of smooth, impunctate median strip posteriorly; punctures distinctly separated. Setation short, subdecumbent; few tactile setae. Antennae moderately enlarged in terminal third; antennomere X 1.6 times, XI 2.4 times as long as wide.

Pronotum 1.5 times as long as wide, distinctly narrower than head including eyes, nearly evenly rounded anteriorly, strongly narrowed and moderately impressed (constricted) postero-laterally in dorsal view; pronotal disc evenly convex in lateral view. Surface rather glossy; antero-lateral sides minutely and sparsely punctate, nearly impunctate near procoxal cavities; disc more distinctly and densely punctate posteriorly, with several transverse wrinkles before smooth antebasal area; postero-lateral impressions shortly and rather finely, longitudinally wrinkled, adjacent dorso-lateral surface rugose. Setation as on head.

Mesosternum with slight indication of median longitudinal bulge. Metasternum simple.

Elytra 1.8 times as long as wide, conjointly rounded apically; humeri distinct; postscutellar impression absent. Surface glossy, distinctly punctate; punctation indistinctly double, setiferous punctures rather widely separated. Setation nearly evenly developed, sparser near base, generally longer and more raised than on head, decumbent; numerous tactile setae.

Metathoracic wings fully developed.

Fore legs modified ( Fig. 20 View FIGURES 20 – 23 ); profemora with short tooth-like process, rounded apically, with short fringe of stiff setae subapically; protibiae nearly simple, moderately swollen and with small protrusion on inner side at about mid-length; penultimate tarsomere widened/flattened distally, with terminal tarsomere articulated dorsally near base in all tarsi. Setation normally developed; pro- and mesotibiae with two, metatibiae with single distinct terminal spur.

Abdominal sternum III with paired submedian, longitudinal protrusions at base. Sternum VII shallowly emarginate and long, densely setose ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 20 – 23 ). Tergum VII simple. Sternite VIII ( Fig. 22 View FIGURES 20 – 23 ); paired prongs moderately lobed and with long slender projection medially. Tergite VIII with paired sclerites somewhat unevenly rounded apically, narrowly connected medially. Terminal sclerite of segment IX (spiculum) membranous, widely rounded and setose apically. Female. Externally differing from male as follows: fore legs and abdominal sterna III, VII simple; both sternum and tergum VII rather strongly produced and narrowly rounded apically.

Variation. Body length (♂♀) 3.6–4.5 mm.

Differential diagnosis. Anthelephila arcana sp. nov. belongs to the A. fossicollis species-group. It may resemble A. davita sp. nov. by the shape of the male protibiae and sternum VII, but differs clearly in the morphology of the paired prongs (cf. Figs 22 View FIGURES 20 – 23 versus 48). Its females seem to be well-characterized by distinctly produced terminalia.

Etymology. From the Latin arcanus (secret, withdrawn), refering to the existence of numerous externally similar species.
