Diagnosis. Wing length 1.0– 1.2 mm. Head, face and antenna black; mesonotum and scutellum black; legs black; calypter yellowish, fringe yellowish. Aedeagus (Fig. 7–9 in Esposito & Prado 1993): basiphallus slightly sclerotized with extension distally; mesophallus short and globose; distiphallus cup-like, about twice length of mesophallus, enlarged in distal half, forming a pair of slender projections distally; epandrium with a pair of spines in the inner margin; surtylus with a spine apically.

Host-plant. Rubiaceae— Richardia brazilienses Gomes.

Distribution. Brazil.

Comments. Among the Neotropical Liriomyza species with a predominantly black body, L. richardii can be easily differentiated by an entirely black antenna, while in the other species the first flagellomere is yellowish. Only L. richardii , L. morio (Brischke) and L. schmidti (Aldrich) have been recorded mining Rubiaceae species until now ( Benavent-Corai et al. 2005).
