Range: — Mexico to Panama;Antilles; Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, to Bolivia ( CH, CO, LP, SC, TA); Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. Widely naturalized in the Old World tropics.

Ecology: —Very common, terrestrial in montane evergreen and semideciduous forests; (400–)1100–3000(–3700) m.

Notes: —The central member of a clade that includes A. lorentzii , A. moorei , A. orbignyanum , and A. tinctum in Bolivia ( Sundue et al. 2010, Hirai et al. 2016, Huiet et al. in prep.). Rhizomes short-creeping, with linear-lanceolate scales, margins entire; rachises glabrous; pinnules entire or incised on distal margins to 1/2 of pinnule length, obovate to rhombic, not articulate, stalks 2–5 mm long, color of stalks passing into pinnule bases, glabrous; veins ending in sinuses at pinnule margins; sori borne at tips of lobes or on distal pinnule margins; indusia small, rounded to round-reniform, glabrous.
