Distribution: — India, endemic (Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya and Tamil Nadu).
Notes: — In the protologue of Smithia hirsuta, Dalzell (1851) mentioned only “Crescit prope Phondaghat”, but no type was indicated nor did he mention the date of collection, number of collection and name of herbarium where specimens housed. Two herbarium specimens collected by Dalzell are traced at K (K000827995 and K000827996) and these should be considered as original material. Of these, the best one, K000827995, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
Smithia blanda var. humilis was described by Prain (1897) based on the collections of Cooke, Gibson, Stocks & Law and Talbot but he did not designate any specific herbarium sheet as holotype. Pertaining to the specification given in the protologue, eight specimens were traced at CAL (CAL0000012742–0000012749) and of these, the better preserved sheet, CAL0000012744, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
