status

5. Smithia gracilis Bentham (1851: 642) .

Type citation: — “Hab. in mont. Nilgherri. Coll. Hohenacker n. 1182”

Lectotype (designated here): — INDIA. Montibus Nilagiri (Nilgiri Mountains), s.d., R. F. Hohenacker 1182 (K000827965!); isolectotypes (FI009735!, HAL0119498 About HAL !, JE00002124!, M0233760!, P02913923! and P02913927!).

Distribution: — India, endemic (Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu).

Notes: — Bentham (1851) described Smithia gracilis based on the gathering of R.F. Hohenacker 1182 from Nilgiri Mountain, but no specific herbarium sheet was designated as holotype. Seven herbarium specimens of R.F. Hohenacker 1182 from Nilgiri Mountain were traced, one each at FI (FI009735), HAL (HAL0119498), JE (JE00002124), K (K000827965) and M (M0233760) and two at P (P02913923 and P02913927). Of these, the best one, K000827965 which belong to the herbarium of Bentham, is designated here as the lectotype as it agrees well with the protologue.
