Material studied. Holotype male. NEW CALEDONIA, Rivière Bleue N.P., humid forest, 170 m, Malaise trap, 20.VI–4.VII.1986, Bonnet de Larbogen & Chazeau (in MNHN). Paratypes. 2 males, Ouinné Valley, 730 m, 166°28’E, 22°02’S, humid forest with araucarians, 27–30.X.1984, Tillier & Bouchet (1 in MNHN, 1 in MZH).

Description. Male. Head. Brown, with antenna unicolorous pale brown, maxillary palpus very pale brown. Eye bridge 2 facets wide. Face with 13–17 scattered longer and shorter setae. Clypeus with 1–5 setae. Maxillary palpus with 3 palpomeres; palpomere 1 longer than palpomere 2, palpomere 3 shortest; palpomere 1 with 2–3 setae, with a dorsal patch of sensilla; surface of antennal flagellomeres rough, flagellomere 4 ( Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 A) 3.4–3.7x as long as wide, the neck shorter than broad, the longest setae shorter than the width of flagellomere. Thorax. Brown, setae pale. Anterior pronotum with 3–5 setae. Episternum 1 with 13–17 setae. Scutum with short dorsocentrals, with some short laterals, scutellum with some long and many short setae. Wing, Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 C. Hyalinous. Length 2.6– 2.8 mm. Width/length 0.45–0.50. Veins distinct. R1/R 0.70–0.80. c/ w 0.75. r-m and bM subequal in length. M, CuA and r-m setose bM non-setose. Legs. Yellowish brown. Coxal setae pale. Apical part of front tibia, Fig. 8 View FIGURE 8 B: tibial organ with pale vestiture forming a long row. Front tibial spur slightly longer than the tibial width. Claws with fine teeth. Abdomen. Pale brown, setae pale and weak. Hypopygium, Figs 8 View FIGURE 8 D, E. Brown, concolorous with abdomen. Gonocoxa longer than gonostylus, mesial margin and membrane with rich setosity, with setose intercoxal lobe. Gonostylus slightly curved, evenly narrowed towards apex, with the mesial side weakly impressed; with a dense apical vestiture, with an apical tooth, with 4–5 mesial megasetae on apical fourth, without apical megasetae. Tegmen broader than long, weakly sclerotized, aedeagal apodeme moderately long.

Discussion. Ctenosciara lobigera differs from all other known species of the genus by having an intercoxal lobe in its hypopygium, similar to various species of Bradysia Winnertz. Ctenosciara lobigera also has some of its aedeagal teeth broad and serrate, like many Bradysia . However, the structure of the gonostylus and the setose posterior wing veins are typical for Ctenosciara , and we place the species accordingly.

Etymology. The name is Latin, lobigera , bearing a lobe, referring to the presence of the intercoxal lobe of the hypopygium.
