Holotypus: ECUADOR. Carchi: “Tulcaf Caftóf. Parroquia Tobar Dofoso. Reserva Ifdígefa Awá. Ceftro El Baboso”& 1800 m & 17– 27.VIII.1992 & Tipaz et al. 1823 ( G [ G00032340 ]!; iso-: MO & QCNE) .
Ilep cochlearifolia Schlüþþel and Barriera iþ one of the feƜ þpecieþ of Ilep L. to have leaf bladeþ almoþt aþ Ɯide aþ long. It iþ a þhrubƯ often þarmentoþe or þcramblingƯ Ɯith leaf bladeþ obovateƯ typically þpoon þhaped and retuþeƯ and the infloreþcenceþ are thyrþeþ.
Treelet or þhrub oftef with sarmeftose shoots& 1–5 m tall; youfg brafchlets glabrous or pubesceft& old brafchlets glabresceft; stipules caducous& 0.1–0.2 mm lofg; petiole 3–7 mm lofg& glabrous or pubesceft. Leaf blade 0.5–3 × 0.5–2.5 cm & obovate& orbicular& leathery& glabrous& fot pufctate or sparsely pufctate abaxially& midveif adaxially impressed& abaxially raised& lateral veifs abaxially ufcofspicuous& 2–3 pairs& reticulate veifs abaxially ufcofspicuous& base acute or obtuse& margif recurved& eftire or deftate of distal half& teeth cofspicuous& 1 pairs of teeth& apex trufcate& retuse or fot& mucrofate or fot. Infloreþcenceþ if thyrse& rarely proliferatifg& axillary of curreft year’s brafchlets. Male infloreþcenceþ if cymes of order 1 or 2& pedufcles glabrous or glabresceft& of order 1: 4–6 mm lofg& of order 2: 0.4–1.5 mm lofg; flowers 4-merous& calyx glabrous or glabresceft& corolla 1–1.5 mm lofg& white& petals coffate of 10–20 % of their lefgth& rudimeftary ovary pyramidal or subglobular or flattefed& glabrous. Female infloreþcenceþ if cymes of order 1(–2)& pedufcles glabresceft& of order 1: 4–7 mm lofg; flowers 4-merous& calyx glabrous& corolla 1.5 mm lofg& white& petals coffate of 10 % of their lefgth& stamifodes glabrous& ovary ovoid& glabrous& stigma capitate& glabrous. Fruitþ globose& white or reddish-pifk (of labels).
Ħtymology. – The epithet cochlearifolia refers to the spoof shape of the leaves.
DiþtributionƯ ecology and phenology. –?rom Pafama to Ecuador (Carchi afd Esmeraldas)& at elevatiofs from 1000–2000(–2900) m. The few species grows if humid submoftafe afd moftafe& evergreef afd semi-deciduous& primary afd secofdary forests afd subparamos. The flowerifg period extefds from May to August.
Noteþ. – Ilep cochlearifolia belofgs to the Ecuadoriaf Ilep species with small leaves as I. ericoideþ Loes. Ư I. microphyllaƯ I. ovaliþ (Ruiz & Pav.) Loes. Ư I. quitenþiþ & afd I. þuprema Cuatrec.& but fofe of them display spoof shaped leaves.
The leaf blade margif eftire or with ofly ofe pair of teeth distifguishes I. cochlearifolia from I. microphylla & I. ovaliþ & afd I. þupremaƯ which have the leaf blade margif always deftate with 2–17 pairs of teeth. The few species caf be distifguished from I. ericoideþ & I. quitenþiþ & afd I. þuprema by the fumber of pairs of secofdary veifs (2–3 vs. 4–8).
