Diagnosis: Bauplan associated with fossorial habits. Body serpentiform, elongate, cylindrical. Four reduced limbs, especially hind limbs, with variable number of digits, some lacking claws. External ear absent; lower eyelid with unsegmented semi-transparent disc. Head scales reduced in number; frontoparietals absent. Ventrals smooth.

Distribution: Central America, from Costa Rica into South America east of the Andes, south to Paraguay, and on some Caribbean islands.
