Vouchers: UCR 3118-002 (2), 3122-001 (23), 3124-001 (2), 3126-002 (10), 3129-002 (8), 3132-001 (8) and 3134- 002 (1). Distribution: North and Central America; from southern Mexico to northern Costa Rica, Atlantic and Pacific drainages; ( Nicaragua) Co, UI, WK, Pr, GM, KP, Es, BF, IM, To, Sa, SJ, RF, LN (Atlantic), Ch, Ne, ER and PN (Pacific); 0–711 masl; Sec, Dia, Amp. Occurrence and conservation status: Nat; LC (2019), population trend stable. Literature: Bussing (1998: 222, in part; brief description, including illustrations and an identification key, and information on distribution, with a map, and ecology), González-Alemán (2006: 93; brief description, including an illustration, and information on distribution and ecology), Poeser (2011: 418; identification key and information on distribution and taxonomy), van den Berghe (2015: 34, as Gambusia nicaraguensis —misidentification; listed, including an illustration and information on distribution and ecology), Álvarez et al. (2021: e3303; brief description, including an identification key and an illustration, and information on distribution) and Angulo (2021: 56; listed, including information on distribution). Remarks: This species is listed here according to the morphological definition of Bussing (1998). Relatively recent molecular studies (e.g., Alda et al. 2013, Bagley et al. 2015, Palacios et al. (2016), however, yield contradictory results regarding the systematics and distributions of this species complex, evidencing the need for integrative work that seeks to resolve such inconsistencies.
