Description: Body elongate, robust and slightly rounded to fusiform; up to 70 cm in length; snout blunt, prominent; upper jaw projecting well beyond the tip of the lower jaw in most species, upper jaw with 3 rows of multicuspid teeth; fins spine-less; adipose fin present; caudal fin forked; usually silvery in color ( Angulo & Gracián-Negrete 2013, Angulo et al. 2021). Distribution: Freshwater; southern Mexico to Argentina ( Angulo & Gracián-Negrete 2013, Nelson et al. 2016). One genus and two species in Nicaraguan freshwaters.
