Description. As in Coproica bispatha with the following exceptions.
Body colour brown. Three genal setae in longitudinal row posterior to vibrissa with anterior seta approximately 1.5 times as long as posterior setae.
Scutellum with 10–12 setae arranged in 2 rows between basal 1/4 and basal 1/2, all subequal in length. Katepisternum with 2 small, subequal dorsal bristles, each approximately 1/5 as long as the distance between dorsal margin of katepisternum and wing base in length. Fore coxa brown, legs light brown. Mid tibia with a small proximal posterodorsal bristle at 2/5. Mid basitarsus with row of 5–7 stout anterior bristles extending from 1/3 to apex, strong sub-basal anteroventral bristle, stout anteroventral bristle at 1/2, and small posteroventral bristles at 1/ 3 and 2/3, additional setae often present on ventral surface, variable, typically as in figure 10. Second costal sector 0.8–1.3 times as long as third costal sector.
Male terminalia: Surstylus with short, blunt posterior process. Postgonites asymmetrical, straight, left postgonite with rounded, spoon-like apex, right postgonite shorter, with pointed apex. Basiphallus L-shaped in lateral view; epiphallus unmodified. Lateral sclerites of distiphallus with elongate, narrow process on distal ventral angle. Central sclerite with distal series of 3 small blunt processes, fused with lateral sclerites just before apex.
Female terminalia: Tergite 10 glabrous, fused to cerci. Cerci glabrous on anterior half, pruinose on posterior half, apical and subapical setae modified into spines. Sternite 7 rounded rectangular, posterior margin with deep medial emargination. Sternite 8 oval, with broad anterior process, and anterior and posterior, medially divided, rows of small setae. Sternite 10 without pair of enlarged medial bristles. Spermathecae spherical, with conical base; duct length 2–3 times as long as spermathecal bulb, without sclerotization at base of bulb.

Etymology. The name brachystyla means “short stylus” referring to the very short pointed posterior process on the surstylus.
Comments. Coproica brachystyla is common throughout Central America, South America and the extreme southern United States. Its northernmost record from northern Utah is unusual in that it's also collected from a high elevation (9600 ft.). Though there is a possibility that the specimen has been mislabelled it may also be a valid outlier. We, therefore, note the record as unusual and let it stand as it is .
Coproica brachystyla is easily distinguished from other species of Coproica by the short, relatively dull male surstylus ( Fig. 66 View FIGURES 65–67 ) and the spinose and glabrous female cerci ( Fig. 72 View FIGURES 72–76 ).
