Description. As in Coproica bifurcata with the following exceptions.
Body length 1.0– 1.8 mm. Face and frons dark brown. Interfrontals in 4 subequal pairs, with 0 or 1 pairs of small postocellar setulae. Eye to gena ratio approximately 2.5:1; 2–4 genal setae in longitudinal row posterior to vibrissa, anterior seta twice as long as posterior setae. Katepisternum with 2 small, subequal dorsal bristles, each approximately 1/8 as long as the distance between dorsal margin of katepisternum and wing base. Mid tibia with small posterodorsal bristle at 2/5. Mid basitarsus with row of small anterior bristles extending from 1/3 to apex, row of small anteroventral setae extending from base to apex, and row of posteroventral setae extending from 1/3 to apex. Second costal sector 0.6–1.0 times as long as third costal sector. Anal vein sinuate, lacking an angulate bend.
Male terminalia: Sternite 5 with posteromedial patch of dense microtrichia. Subanal plate incomplete, light membrane in its place, cercus with rounded ventral process, process on left cercus longer than on right. Surstyli slightly asymmetrical, with dense short setae along posterior margin, left surstylus with small posteroventral emargination, right surstylus with posteroventral emargination 2 times larger than on left surstylus. Postgonites asymmetrical, broad, left postgonite sinuate and pointed at apex, right postgonite straight, narrow along distal 1/5 and pointed at apex. Basiphallus straight, with abrupt posterior angle. Lateral sclerites of distiphallus with sharp, elongate process at posterodorsal angle, distal most of 3 dorsal processes narrow, sharp, deflected medially.
Female terminalia: Tergite 8 long laterally and short dorsally. Sternite 7 broad, with 2 faint membranous lobes along posterior margin. Sternite 8 rounded, anterior margin with a pointed process. Sternite 10 with 1 pair of enlarged medial bristles, posterior margin not curved dorsally. Spermathecae elongate; duct approximately 2 times as long as spermathecal bulb.

Etymology. The specific name is based on the Latin word emarginatus, and refers to the notched apex of the male surstylus.
Comments. Males have asymmetrical surstyli ( Figs. 115, 116 View FIGURES 115–120 ), an unusual character in the genus. Females of C. emarginata and C. hirtuloidea can be separated by the anterior margin of sternite 8, which has a pointed process in C. emarginata ( Fig. 123 View FIGURES 121–124 ). Dissections are typically required to distinguish female specimens of these species from Central America or Northern South America, where their ranges overlap.
The northernmost record of this species from Gogebic County, Michigan is highly suspect, although the specimen has been dissected to confirm its identification. Though there is a possibility that the specimen has been mislabelled it may also be a valid outlier. We, therefore, note the record as unusual and let it stand as it is.
