Pseudocephennium araguanum Jałoszyński View in CoL

( Figs 2 View FIGURES 1 – 2 , 7–12, 19–22)

Pseudocephennium araguanum Jałoszyński, 2012: 466 , figs 10A–D, 11H–I.

Material studied: VENEZUELA (Aragua State): 2 ♂♂, Rancho Grande (i.e., Henri Pittier National Park), near Maracay, presumably spring 1982 (see Materials and methods), leg. H. Franz (NHMW, cPJ).

Remarks. This species has been known so far from a single holotype male collected in the same area (Jałoszyński 2012). The aedeagus of the holotype is in repose (Figs 7–8), whereas those of the newly found specimens are erected, one representing a possible intermediary stage (Figs 9–10) and the other one with fully extruded endophallic sclerites and membranes. In the holotype (Figs 7–8), only apices of the lateral projections (lap) extend beyond the apex of the median lobe, and the membranous projections (mmp) are folded in the subapical area, inside the median lobe. In the intermediary stage (Figs 9–10) the membranous projections are still folded inside the median lobe, but shifted more distally, while the lateral projections are largely extruded and pointing apically. When all movable structures are fully extended (Figs 11–12), the membranous projections (mmp) are inflated, bent at a nearly right angle and extending laterally outside the median lobe; the lateral projections (lap) are also fully extruded and rotated laterally, so that they are perpendicular to the long axis of the aedeagus; and the median projection (mep) is rotated dorsobasally.

FIGURES 3–14. Aedeagus in ventral (3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13) and lateral (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14) views. Pseudocephennium maximum , non-type specimen, non-erected (3−4) and holotype, fully erected (5−6); Pseudocephennium araguanum , holotype, nonerected (7−8), and two non-type specimens, partly erected (9−10) and fully erected (11−12); Pseudocephennium auriculatum sp. n., holotype (13−14). Abbreviations: dph, diaphragm; lap, lateral projection; mep, median projection; mmp, membranous projection.
