Plantago carinata Schrad. ex Mertens & Koch (1823: 810)

The name Plantago carinata was published by Mertens & Koch (1823: 810) in the 3 rd edition of Röhling’s Deutschlands Flora as “ Plantago carinata Schrad. ” These authors provided a morphological description, and listed the following synonyms: “… P. wulfenii … P. subulata Wulf. … P. gerardi Schult. … P. holosteum Röm. et Schult. ”. Actually Röemer & Schultes (1818: 136) simply accepted the name P. holosteum Scop. and synonymized the name P. carinata to it. Plantago wulfenii was proposed by Sprengel (1806: 54) as a new name for “ P. subulata sensu Wulfen , non L.” while P. gerardi was described by Schultes (1814: 298-299) as a species separated from P. wulfenii Spreng. (see Schultes 1814: 298). All things stated, P. carinata Schrad. ex Mert. & W.D.J.Koch should be considered as a name for the “ P. subulata sensu Wulfen , non L.”. Since the two valid names ( P. wulfenii , and P.gerardii ) were cited by Mertens & Koch (1823: 810) as synonyms of their P. carinata , this latter is to be considered an illegitimate name (Art. 52.2). Moreover P. carinata Mert. & W.D.J.Koch is a later homonym of P. carinata Moench (1794: 460) 1 and so it is also illegitimate (Art. 53.2).
