Schoenobius aurantiacus Rothschild, 1926: 9 syn.n.
Diagnosis. Male genitalia with the valva broad, ventral part distally rounded starting near the sacculus; aedeagus with a strongly developed hook-shape d cornutus. Female genitalia with short rounded corpus bursae and enlarged ductus seminalis. Tympanal organs with rami tympani clearly curved.
Description. Costa of fore wing in males usually much darker than rest of the wing; ground colour more golden-yellow than other Adelpherupa species. Black spots in subterminal margins of wings. Fore wings of males shorter than females and more rectangular than other species.
Male genitalia. Uncus with some short setae near the tip; gnathos membranous medially densely covered with short spines; valva with costa straight ending in a rounded point, but not protruding as in A. costipunctalis , ventral part of valva broadly rounded, starting from the sacculus; aedeagus long with a slender single hook-shape d cornutus.
Female genitalia. Papillae anales weakly sclerotized, membranous with short and long setae; apophyses long and slender; ostium bursae membranous; ductus bursae with numerous parallel folds near the enlarged ductus seminalis; corpus bursae small, rounded.
Tympanal organs. Rami tympani curved, medially separated; no median sclerotization present in the zona glabra tympani.
Wing span. 19–24 mm Distribution. From West Africa to Sudan. Note. The specimen labelled ‘Ft.Johnson’ ( Malawi) collected in 1896 by
P. Rendall is problematic. No other specimens of A. avescens were collected from
Malawi or neighbouring countries.
Life cycle. This species has been bred from rice.
