Crassiclitellata with one oesophageal gizzard in vi; paired, extra-mural calciferous glands in some or all of segments vii–xiv; typhlosole ribbon-shaped, variously folded or pouched. Vascular system with dorsal and ventral trunks, supraoesophageal trunk, paired extra-oesophageal trunks median to the hearts, subneural vessel adherent to body wall. Holonephridia stomate, vesiculate in intestinal region. Dorsal pores lacking. Spermathecae, adiverticulate, in front of the gonadal segments. Male pores behind female pores, microscopic if primary; or if macroscopic then connected to intramural copulatory chambers.

This is identical with the definition of the Pontoscolecidae in James and Davidson (2012).

Two other errors in James and Davidson (2012) were pointed out. Parachilota Pickford, 1937 was listed in a table as being in the Microchaetidae rather than in the Acanthodrilidae , where it belongs. Geogenia pondoana Michaelsen, 1913 was misspelled G. pandoana .
