Epoicocladius Šulc et Zavřel, 1924 View in CoL

Epoicocladius Šulc et Zavřel, 1924: 368 View in CoL ; Saether, 1969: 137; Coffman et al., 1986: 172; Cranston et al. 1989: 194; Makarchenko & Makarchenko 2006: 312; Ashe & O’Connor 2012: 266; Andersen et al. 2013: 218. Type species: Camptocladius ephemerae Kieffer, 1924 View in CoL , by original designation.

Diagnostic characters: The straight gonostylus, elongate apical palp segment, bare wings, eyes and squama combined with extended costa will easily differentiate Epoicocladius View in CoL adults from other genera in the subfamily Ortho- cladiinae. The ovoid thoracic horn and elongate tails on the anal lobe with the presence of numerous setae on most abdominal segments will differentiate the pupae. The larval habitat, body covered with strong setae and the strongly arched mentum with numerous teeth allows the larvae to be easily identified.

Emended diagnosis. Based on the Chinese materials, the generic diagnosis of pupae and adult Epoicocladius ( Coffman et al. 1986, Cranston et al. 1989) must be emended as follows. Pupae: three precorneals with variable length (pupal exuviae of E. ephemerae (Kieffer) from China and Europe). Male: wing length up to 1.10–2.48 mm; AR 0.65–2.21 (2.21 in E. itachisecundus (Sasa et Kawaii)) ; anal lobe weakly to strongly developed; anal point absent or present, if present, triangular with rounded or needle shaped apex ( E. wangi Yan et Liu sp. n.); inferior volsella strongly developed, triangular, with or without projection ( E. wangi Yan et Liu sp. n.).

Distribution: The genus Epoicocladius Šulc et Zavřel has an Holarctic and Oriental distribution ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 ).
