Type species: Meromyza africana Loew (lapsus & unavailable name = Meromyza ZSM). Loew, 1860)
The genus Meromyzella Andersson is based upon a single species, M. capensis Loew. Andersson used for capensis the name of africana Loew , which is unavailable and in error for capensis . The inclusion of Meromyza incompleta Loew, 1860 in new combination in this genus by Sabrosky (1980: 710) is a mistake, as Sabrosky has pointed out to me (comb. orig.). Meromyzella is included by Andersson (1977: 120–131) in his Platycephala genus group along with Pachylophus , Meromyza Meigen , Platycephalisca , Platycephala , Eurina , Trichieurina Duda, 1933 and Camarota Meigen, 1830 , all Old World genera, and to which group Paraeurina Duda, 1933 , a monotypic Italian genus overlooked by Andersson, and the more recently described South African genus Archimeromyza Deeming, 1981 and Dudeurina Ismay, 1995 from New Guinea also belong. Meromyzella is structurally very similar to Pachylophus , but has a filiform micropubescent arista, and its habits and chosen habitat are similar.
