Wanritettix wanrianus (Matsumura) View in CoL
( Fig. 1F & M View FIGURE 1 ; Fig. 2F & M View FIGURE 2 ; Fig. 6A–G View FIGURE 6 ).
Thamnotettix wanrianus Matsumura, 1914 View in CoL ; Taiwan (Wanri)
Wanritettix wanrianus (Matsumura) View in CoL ; Vilbaste 1969
Measurements (mm): Male 4.69 long, 1.21 wide across eyes, 0.73 wide across posterolateral angles of pronotum.
Material examined: 1 ♂, India: Meghalaya, Barapani , 01.VI.2012, Sweep net coll., Naresh M. Meshram ( NPC) . 1 ♂, India: Nagaland, Jarnapani , 15.III.2020, Hg light, Stuti ( NPC) .
Diagnosis: Crown with pair of round black spots ( Fig. 1F View FIGURE 1 ). Male pygofer longer than wide, rounded distally, patch of long stout macrosetae on postero- subapical region, pygofer processs straight and pointed ( Fig. 6A&B View FIGURE 6 ). Subgenital plate long, terminated by narrow fingerlike process, uniserate macrosetae on outer lateral margins, with numerous long hair like seate ( Fig. 6C View FIGURE 6 ). Style elongate, well developed apophysis, apex of style is more arcute. Connective Y-shaped, stem longer than arms. Aedeagus elongate, strongly arcuate in lateral view, with pair of thin processes originated from base of the shaft and running parallel to shaft, dorsal apodeme well developed, gonopore apical ( Fig. 6F&G View FIGURE 6 ).
Remarks: This species was re-described and illustrated by Vilbaste (1969) based on examination of Matsumura’s type specimen at Hokkaido University. Although the male genital characters of our specimens from India closely resemble the illustrations of Matsumura’s type from Taiwan given by Vilbaste, some differences are apparent (description of type from Vilbaste in parentheses): pygofer rounded distally, with process straight and pointed (pygofer obliquely truncate distally with process curved and blunt tipped); apex of style more arcute (truncate); aedeagus in lateral view strongly arcuate (more or less straight). Examination of additional specimens from throughout the range of this species are needed to determine whether the variation noted here is discontinuous and may indicate that the Indian population represents a distinct species.
