4.2. Preparation of crude solvent extracts from red seaweed G. salicornia
The leaves (thalli) of red seaweed G. salicornia (voucher specimen number AC.3.1.1.4) was harvested during the low spring tides in the inter-monsoon wet period of March 2017 from Mandapam (Gulf of Mannar region; between 8̊48′ N, 78̊9′ E and 9̊14′ N, 79̊14’ E) on the southeast coastline of the Indian sub-continent (Fig. S41). The samples were identified by a marine algologist Dr. Chellaiah Periyasamy of the Aquaculture Foundation of India, Madurai, and were deposited in the project repository under the accession number of GS. 1.4.2.1. The samples were subjected to repetitive washing with tap water and dehydrated at room temperature for 4 days. Dried leaves of seaweed were powdered (~ 1000 g) before being extracted with the solvent ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and methanol (MeOH) (1:1, v/v, 750 mL) at 50 ̊C for 3 h under reflux. The extracts were filtered over Whatman No. 1 filter paper using sodium sulfate (~ 115 g) and evaporated using a rotary vacuum evaporator (IKA Werke GmbH & Co., Germany) below 55 ̊C to obtain the crude extract (37 g) of G. salicornia . The extract was utilised for various chromatographic fractionations to yield the bioactive metabolites.
