(no genus) vansa View in CoL ; Beattie, 1976. Rhop. Direct., p. 282.
Type material. Telemiades vansa Evans, 1953 was described base on the male [holo]type from Demerara River, British Guiana [ Guyana]. The male holotype is deposited at the NHMUK and illustrated on Butterflies of America ( Warren et al. 2018) with the following labels: / Type [verso from the same label:] vansa Evans / Rio Demerara/ Rothschild Bequest B.M. 1939–1./ 81/ [label with genitalia attached]/ BMNH(E) 1236502/.
Diagnosis. FW length: males 15–17 mm (n=4) and females 17 mm (n=3). Telemiades vansa is distinguished from the other species of the genus by the following characters: FW with two cellular (upper and lower) and two discal (in M 3 –CuA 1 and CuA 1 –CuA 2) hyaline spots, in some specimens these spots are not so evident; lateral apophysis of the tegumen extending throughout the entire length of uncus; valva with dorso–distal margin with a serrated crest–like projection, curved inwards; aedeagus with dorsal opening with 2/3 of its total length; ductus bursae with two rounded and sclerotinized plates.
Distribution. Telemiades vansa occurs in areas of low altitudes in Amazonia Forest, with records in French Guiana, Suriname, and in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. There is a unique record from Rolândia, Paraná state, Brazil, but probably this specimen was mislabeled.
Taxonomic discussion. After the description of T. vansa, Mielke (1973) recorded it for the first time in Brazil (Belém, Pará) and illustrated the male genitalia. Although this species is phenotypically similar to other species of the genus, for instance T. squanda and T. trenda , the morphology of the male genitalia with the lateral apophysis of the tegumen extending throughout the entire length of uncus is unique within the genus.
