Polycirrus Grube, 1850 View in CoL
Diagnosis. Expanded tentacular membrane. No branchiae. Notochaetae from segment 2 or 3 and 10 to 70 segments with notochaetae. Notochaetae pinnate, hirsute or smooth with narrow wings. Thoracic uncini present or absent. Abdominal uncini always present.
Discussion. Hutchings & Glasby (1986) pointed out that the tentacular membrane expanded anteriorly along the medial axis and laterally to form a trilobated membrane is derived from the prostomium. However, Garraffoni & Lana (submitted) suggested that the tentacular membrane, or upper lip, is a structure localized in the anterior dorsal part of the mouth. Therefore, the ventral continuation of the upper lip was named as the lower lip. Thus, the upper and lower lip considered as a peristomial presegmental region of the body surrounding the mouth ( Fauchald & Rouse,1997; Rouse, 2000; Glasby, 2001).
