Natural history. This species is the poplar and willow borer of the economic entomological literature (Blatchley and Leng 1916; Garbutt and Harris 1994). Adults and larvae are associated with various species of willow, poplar, alder and birch ( Salicaceae , Betulaceae ). Larvae mine young stems. It is not clear if the species was introduced into North America from Europe or is a native Holarctic species.
Distribution. Fig. 25 View Figs . This species is found in the United States in CT, D.C., ID, IL, MA, ME, MI, MN, MT, NC, ND, NJ, NY, OR, PA, SD, UT, WA, WI and in Canada in AB, BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, PQ (O’Brien & Wibmer 1982; Bousquet 1991; specimens examined herein).
Diagnosis. Body length 5.6–8.3 mm ( Figs 7–8 View Figs ). Pronotum with distinct tufts of black scales on either side of middle on anterior margin, laterally and on midline just anterior to midlength. Femora each with 2 distinctly separated teeth. Elytra with strial punctures large and deep, at least some wider than width of adjacent elytral intervals; with concentrations of black erect scales on intervals 3 and 5 throughout basal 2/3 of length; apical 1/3 of elytra with bright white scales distinctly contrasting with dark scales on rest of elytra. Male ventrite 5 ( Fig. 14 View Figs ) flat, not modified; ventrite 1 longitudinally impressed medially. Aedeagus ( Fig. 19 View Figs ).
