Natural history. Adults have been collected from poison sumac ( Toxicodendron vernix (L.) Kuntze) vines, under bark of pecan ( Carya illinoensis (Wangh.) K. Koch ), and have been reared from Toxicodendron radicans (L.) Kuntze (as Rhus ) and Acer saccharum Marsh. Blatchley and Leng (1916) report that it has been collected by beating hickory, sifting old leaves, and from dead twigs.
Distribution. Fig. 21 View Figs . This species is found in the eastern United States and Canada. State records are AR, CT, D.C., FL, GA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MS, NC, NJ, NY, OH, SC, TN, TX, WV; provincial records are ON, PQ (O’Brien & Wibmer 1982; Bousquet 1991; specimens examined herein).
Diagnosis. Body length 5.0– 7.5 mm ( Figs. 1–2 View Figs ). Pronotum with distinct tufts of black scales on either side of middle on anterior margin, laterally and on midline just anterior to midlength; width distinctly narrower than elytra at base, only very slightly wider than long. Femora each with 1 or 2 teeth, if 2 teeth then distal tooth poorly developed and very small. Elytra with concentrations of dark erect scales on intervals 3 and 5 near base and at about midlength. Male ventrite 5 ( Fig. 11 View Figs ) with pair of small scale-tufted tubercles situated near basal margin; ventrite 1 longitudinally impressed medially and with pair of raised scale-tufted swellings on each side of midline at apical margin.
