Premnobius Eichhoff, 1878: 404 View in CoL

Type species. Premnobius cavipennis Eichhoff, 1878: 404 View in CoL ; monotypy.

Taxonomic comments. Schedl (1957) treated Premnobius View in CoL as a synonym of Xyleborus Eichhoff. View in CoL This was disputed by Browne (1962) who restored it as a valid genus and removed it from the Xyleborini. All subsequent authors have treated it as a valid genus, but with different tribal placement.

Distribution. There are 22 species known from the Afrotropical region, two of which have been introduced into the Americas ( Wood & Bright 1992). There are five Neotropical species, one of which is described here ( Atkinson et al. 2018).

Biology. Browne (1961) described the biology of Premnobius cavipennis in detail from central Africa. It is a polyphagous ambrosia beetle with males that are flightless, reduced in size, and with a female-biased sex ratio.
