Diagnosis. TL= 11.4–12.6 mm; TL-H = 10.7–11.9 mm; MW 6.0– 6.7 mm; pronotum testaceous with a black marking narrowly extended to anterior margin; elytron with basal fasciae in most of the specimens not confluent with humeral lateral spots, and without subbasal, longitudinal yellowish stripes; elytron with a large lateral spot just behind middle, and apical third largely irrorated ( Fig. 2C View FIGURE 2 ); protarsomere I with a series of spines across the dorsal surface; metatibia with bifid setae curved ventro-basally on posterior surface; median lobe of aedeagus apically obtuse in lateral view ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–7 ).

Differential diagnosis. Hydaticus subfasciatus can be separated from H. lateralis , H. devexus and H. xanthomelas in having a basal fascia on elytra, and elytral apex largely irrorated ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 4–7 ).

Distribution. Hydaticus subfasciatus is the most widespread species of the genus in South America, it has been recorded from the lowlands of Brazil, Bolivia, French Guiana, Dominica, Guatemala, Panama and Suriname ( Trémouilles 1996; Peck 2006; Ferreira (Jr.) & Braga 2009; Short 2013; Miller & Bergsten 2014), and was previously recorded from Peru by Hendrich et al. (2015). Its range of distribution has now extended to Colombia, Venezuela and Costa Rica ( Fig. 8).

Ecology. Hydaticus subfasciatus was generally found in rest pools and puddles ( Fig. 10A View FIGURE 10 ), and in backwaters of intermittent forest streams, packed with leaf litter and rotten wood ( Fig. 10B View FIGURE 10 ). Additional specimens were collected from two mainly shaded forest ponds, seasonally flooded during the rainy season from October to April, and with high fluctuation level. The ponds are rainwater fed and located in a primary tropical lowland rainforest surrounded by Aguaje palm trees ( Fig. 9B View FIGURE 9 ). The muddy bottom was covered by broad layers of fallen and rotten leaves and twigs (see Hendrich et al. 2015). The species was associated with Agaporomorphus julianeae Hendrich, Apenborn, Burmeister & Balke, 2015 , A. tambopatensis Miller, 2005 , Hydrodytes opalinus (Zimmermann, 1921) , Vatellus grandis Buquet, 1840 , several unidentified species of Copelatus (all Dytiscidae ), Tropisternus chalybeus Laporte, 1840 , and several unidentified species of Helochares (all Hydrophilidae ) (see Hendrich et al. 2015). Hydaticus subfasciatus is sympatric with H. panguana sp. nov. and H. lateralis . The species is also attracted to light and can be easily obtained by using baited bottle traps.
