Urophora syriaca (Hendel, 1927) View in CoL

Found at 700± 950 m. ex Centaurea calcitrapa : 1F, Ainab, Aley Co. (Mount Lebanon). ex Echinops viscosus : 2M and 6F, Ghazze, West Beqaa Co. (Beqaa); 1F, Chtaura, Zahleh Co. (Beqaa Valley); 2M and 3F Ainab, Aley Co. (Mount Lebanon).

Urophora syriaca View in CoL is specialist on Echinops viscosus View in CoL . However, one female was reared from Centaurea calcitrapa View in CoL , which is a new but an unusual host for this species and could reēct an oviposition mistake, considering that the Centaurea View in CoL plants were growing in close proximity to E. viscosus View in CoL . In Israel, U. syriaca View in CoL attacks the heads of Echinops spp. mainly in June, which was the only time this ¯y was found in Lebanon. The distribution of this species includes only Syria, Lebanon and Israel ( Freidberg, 1974; Freidberg and Kugler, 1989; White and Korneyev, 1989).
