Kongsbergia View in CoL (s.s.) reticulata Habeeb, 1956

( Figs. 1–7, 79, 80, 109)

Kongsbergia reticulata Habeeb, 1956, pp. 1–2 , Figs. 1–3; male.

Description. Character states of the reticulata subgroup. Male: Idiosoma in dorsal view elongate and shieldshaped, usually widest in humeral area. Dorsal shield ( Figs. 1, 79) with anterior margin slightly convex or nearly transverse and crenellate with a small depression medially, lacking a nipple- or dome-shaped projection; with edge linear or slightly convex in area between eyes and humeral region and with a modest humeral angle; with reticulate sculpturing weakly developed and diffuse in area between and anterior to postocular setae; anteromedial hump small, lateral ridges low and meeting lateral edges of shield near midlength, posterior depression shallow ( Fig. 109); ridge bearing excretory pore low; bearing three pairs of slender, short and straight setae on posterior edge; variable in color but often yellowish with pale red patches anteriorly and posteriorly, occasionally orange with black patches anteriorly and posteriorly or with purple patches anteriorly and posteriorly and an additional medial orange area at anterior edge of posterior purple patch. Ventral shield ( Fig. 2) with projections covering insertions of fourth legs well developed and rounded posteriorly; bearing three pairs of slender setae near posterior edge. Pedipalp ( Fig. 3) with femur enlarged and bearing three papillate projections proximoventrally. Fourth leg ( Fig. 4) with segments and setae as illustrated. Female: Dorsal shield ( Figs. 5, 80) similar in shape, sculpturing and color to that of male but with ridges relatively weakly developed. Ventral shield ( Fig. 6) with projections covering insertions of fourth legs smaller than in male. Pedipalp ( Fig. 7) with femur not enlarged and tibia proportionally longer than in male.

Distribution. Eastern and central Canada (New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan) and northeastern and central USA (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia).

Remarks. Males of Kongsbergia reticulata differ from those of K. cooki sp. nov. in that the ridges on the dorsal shield are more prominent and the dorsal hump is higher, and the color pattern is usually more intense. They differ from males of K. labyrintha in that the dorsal shield is more rounded, the ridges on the shield are less strongly developed and the reticulate sculpturing is less extensive and less regular. They differ from males of K. crumpae sp. nov. in that the ridges on the dorsal shield are more developed and the tibia of the pedipalp lacks a prominent proximoventral projection.

Kongsbergia reticulata is the most widespread and commonly collected species of the genus in eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. The populations from Mississippi differ from other members of K. reticulata in that they are deeply pigmented with purple patches anteriorly and posteriorly and an additional medial orange area at the anterior edge of posterior purple patch. The population in the Torch River in central Saskatchewan is geographically widely separated from other known populations but adults exhibit morphological character states that are typical for members of K. reticulata .
