Redescription. Measurements. Females: 3.7–4.6 mm (holotype 4.0 mm). Dorsal side almost glabrous with sparse short setae on posterior third of elytra, oval, moderately convex. Body, legs and antennae metallic bluishblack, except mouthparts brown to black and abdomen yellow.
Female ( Fig. 23 View FIGURES 23 – 28 , holotype Fig. 32 View FIGURES 32 – 39 ). Anterior part of head impunctate, almost glabrous, with very short setae on anterior margin of clypeus. Interantennal space 0.8 times as wide as transverse diameter of antennal socket.
Interocular space 2.3 time as wide as transverse diameter of eye. Antennae filiform, 0.65 times as long as body, length ratio of antennomeres equals 10-5-6-9-11- 11-11-11-10 -10-13.
Pronotum 1.3 times as broad as long, widest in anterior third, covered with fine punctures. Anterior margin slightly concave, lateral margins slightly rounded, posterior margin widely rounded with middle part straight. Anterior margin very finely bordered, lateral and posterior margins moderately bordered. Anterior angles rectangular, swollen with setigerous pore, posterior angles obtusangulate with small pointed tip with setigerous pore, all pores bearing long pale seta, additional short setae visible on lateral margins of pronotum.
Elytra 1.45–1.50 times as long as wide and 0.7 times as long as body, widest in midlength.
Length ratio of protarsomeres I, II, III and V equals 9-5-5-9, of metatarsomeres I, II, III and V equals 13-6-5- 12.
Posterior margin of last ventrite widely rounded ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Pygidium subtriangular with rounded apex ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Sternite VIII subpentagonal, apical margin straight, group of 5 setae placed laterally at each side, tignum slender, 2.1 times longer than sternite VIII ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ). Spermatheca: nodulus suboval, slightly narrower anteriorly, cornu narrower than nodulus, rectangular, proximal spermathecal duct gradually narrowing posteriorly ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ).
Male. Unknown.
Distribution. Taiwan.
Biology. Unknown.
Differential diagnosis. Charaea costatum can be distinguished from all congeners (not only from Taiwan) by costa on lateral slope in posterior half of elytra.
