Pardofelis Severtzov 1858

Pardofelis Severtzov 1858 , Rev. Mag. Zool. Paris, ser. 2, 10: 387.

Type Species: Felis marmorata Martin 1837

Species and subspecies: 1 species with 2 subspecies:

Species Pardofelis marmorata (Martin 1836)

Subspecies Pardofelis marmorata subsp. marmorata Martin 1836

Subspecies Pardofelis marmorata subsp. charltonii Gray 1846

Discussion: There is considerable controversy over the correct placement of this genus. Hemmer (1978), Král and Zima (1980), Groves (1982 a), Kratochvíl (1982 c), Collier and O’Brien (1985), and Bininda-Emonds et al. (1999) placed it as the first outgroup to the Pantherines. Pocock (1932 d), Weigel (1961), Salles (1992), and Mattern and McLennan (2000) suggested a relationship with felines while recognizing similarities with Panthera . McKenna and Bell (1997) placed it as a subgenus of Felis . It perhaps should be considered incertae sedis.
