Bibio mimas L. Heyden, 1870 View in CoL (figs. 76)

Bibio Mimas L. Heyden 1870: 258 View in CoL .

Bibio infumatus Meunier, 1915 Syn.n.

Type (female) Coll. Krantz (Bonn?), not seen.

Additional material? LACMIP 2533.1066ab (female), 2533.1144ab (isolated wing), 2533.1151 (isolated wing).

Description gleaned from Heyden (1870: 258) and Meunier (1915):

Female (fig. 76):

Total length 10.0– 10.9 mm (N=2).

Head: Rather small, oblong, antennae half as long as head.

Thorax: Length approx. 2.2 mm (N=1). Black.

Legs: coxae and tibiae pale coloured, tibiae?, tarsi dark. Legs more gracile than in Bibio janus .

Wing length 8.7 mm, width 3.6 mm (N=1). Pterostigma dark and distinctive. Basal Rs approximately as long as R-M. Crossvein M-Cu joins M 2 considerably distad of furcation.

Male unknown.

Discussion:

The symmetrical R-fork combined, rather narrow M-fork and relatively large size could be diagnostic for this species, though it is difficult to be sure how reliable the figures in Heyden and Meunier’s descriptions are. Meunier (1915) described Bibio infumatus from an isolated wing, we did not succeed in locating the specimen but a good photograph of it was published by Meunier (1915, Plate XXIII. Fig. 4)
