Subgenus Clanculopsis Monterosato, 1880
Type species. Trochus cruciatus Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL , SD (Sacco 1896: 21); present-day, Mediterranean Sea .
Diagnosis. Shell shape and sculpture like Clanculus (Clanculus) ; basal columella tooth simple, uppermost ridge on interior of outer lip not significantly larger than other labral ridges and not produced to form an anal tooth; apertural dentition less well developed than that of Clanculus s. s. and parietal ridges rarely prominent; inner portion of umbilicus filled with callus deposit ( Herbert 1993).
Remarks. The oldest records of this group in Europe dates back to the Chattian of the NE Atlantic. During the middle Miocene it appears with several species also in the Proto-Mediterranea and the Paratethys seas.
